S1. Graphene and other 2D materials

Since its discovery in 2004, the excellent mechanical and electronic properties of graphene have attacked the interest of the scientific community for a whole bunch of applications. The chemical functionalization of graphene by means of covalent or supramolecular methods, besides allowing its solubilisation and precluding reaggregation, gives access to new properties for novel and improved applications.

This huge scientific activity around graphene drove to the study of its analog systems, the 2D materials; the initial interest of physicists is now extended to the area of chemistry, from both points of view, the exfoliation and the modulation of its properties by chemical functionalization or its application in catalysis. This symposium aims to cover the state of the art, from the chemical point of view, both graphene as 2D materials.

Fernando Langa

Fernando Langa is full Professor of Organic Chemistry (2002) and Head of the INAMOL at Univ. de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Toledo. He obtained the PhD at the Univ. Complutense; he worked as Post.doc in the Univ. of Dundee (UK) in Prof. W. Horspool group working on organic photochemistry. In 1990 he moved to UCLM. He has been visiting researcher in Univ. Paris-Sud and Univ. of California, Los Angeles. His current research interests focus on carbon nanostructures, including graphene, organic solar cells and molecular wires. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Angela Sastre Ángela Sastre-Santos is currently Full Professor of Organic Chemistry (2010) and Deputy Head of the Instituto de Biongeniería at the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche. Her research interest focuses on the synthesis of molecular and supramolecular electroactive systems with nano- and biotechnological applications. She is the President of the Nanoscience and Molecular Material Division (March 2013-). She has published more than 100 research papers.

Alicia Forment

Alicia Forment Aliaga carried out her degree and PhD in Chemistry in the University of Valencia. From 2005 till 2008 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (Stuttgart). Afterwards she joined the Instituto the Ciencia Molecular in Valencia granted by a Juan de la Cierva fellowship and a Ramon y Cajal contract (current position). At present she coordinates a research line in molecular engineering on surfaces (2D materials, soft lithographies, characterization of molecular systems on surfaces and spintronics).

Andreas Hirsch Andreas Hirsch received his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of Tübingen. From 1990 to 1991 he was a postdoctoral fellow in Santa Barbara, California. In 1994 he received his Dr. Habilitus in Tübingen Germany, for which he was honored with a variety of prizes and awards including the Otto-Röhm Research Award (1994) and the ADUC Award (1994). Since October 1995, he has been Full Professor at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. In 2006 he received the Elhuyar-Goldschmidt-Prize. In 2010 he received an ERC Advanced Grant and in 2012 he received the Max Grundig Award.

NikosTagmatarchis Nikos Tagmatarchis is Deputy Director at the Theoretical and Physical Chemistry Inst., National Hellenic Research Foundation (Athens, Greece). He received his PhD from the Chemistry Department, Univ. of Crete, Greece (1997). His research interests focus on carbon nanostructures and other layered 2D materials. His accomplishments in the area are reflected in >180 publications, >8000 citations, h-index=38. He has been recipient of the European Young Investigator Award (2004), Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2011) and Invited Fellow by the Japan Soc. for the Promotion of Science (2012-2013).

Manisch Chhowalla

Manish Chhowalla is a Professor, Associate Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department, and the Director of the Institute for Advanced Materials, Devices and Nanotechnology at Rutgers University. From June 2009 – July 2010, he was a Professor in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Institute of Physics. He is also the Editor in Chief of Applied Materials Today. His current interests are in the fundamental studies of 2D materials.

Dario Bassani obtained a PhD in Chemistry from Northwestern University (1993). He was then a Hoffman-La Roche Fellow at the Institut für Physikalische Chemie (Universität Basle, Switzerland) and a Pierre and Marie Currie Fellow at the Université Luis Pasteur (Strasbourg, France). Since 1997 DB is a CNRS researcher at the University of Bordeaux. He is the recipient of the Inter-American Photochemical Society Young Investigator Award (2003), the French Chemical Society Physical Chemistry Division Award, (2004) and the Grammaticakis-Neumann Award from the Swiss Photochemical Society (2005). S2. Optoelectronic Organic Materials for Energy Conversion

The modern society has mainly been built on the use of fossil fuels as main energy source for supplying our energetics requirements. Unfortunately, the scarcity of oil, coal and natural gas together with the global warming appeared as devastating side effects in our planet. Therefore, developing a real alternative clean energy source is critical to face the future of mankind. One of the most promising ways to cope with the energy issues that our planet is suffering is to harvest efficiently the light coming from the Sun. This renewable energy is free, clean and inexhaustible. This symposium is focused on those materials capable of transform solar energy into other energy sources, with special emphasis on photovoltaic devices of organic nature, including perovskites based solar cells and/or hydrogen production.

Nazario Martín

Nazario Martín, FRSC, is full professor at University Complutense of Madrid and vice-director of IMDEA-Nanoscience Institute. Dr. h.c. by La Havana and Castilla La Mancha Universities, his research interests are focused on molecular and supramolecular chemistry of carbon nanostructures, electron transfer, photovoltaic applications and nanoscience. He has published over 500 papers. He is currently the President of the Confederation of Scientific Societies of Spain.

Emilio Palomares

Emilio Palomares is BSc in Biology specializing in Biochemistry from the University of Valencia and PhD in Chemistry from the Universidad Politénica of Valencia. Agustin Molina

Agustín Molina obtained his degree in Chemistry in 2006 at Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Then he joined Nazario Martin group in the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. In April of 2011, he obtained his PhD with the Thesis entitled: “Synthesis of new molecular wires”. In 2014, he joined IMDEA Nanoscience as a Postdoctoral Researcher. Mohammad K. Nazeeruddin 

Mohammad K. Nazeeruddin  received M.Sc. and Ph. D. in inorganic chemistry from Osmania University, India. After one year postdoctoral stay with Prof. Graetzel at Swiss federal institute of technology Lausanne (EPFL), he joined the same institute as a Senior Scientist. In 2014, EPFL awarded him the title of Professor. His current research at EPFL focuses on Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Perovskite Solar Cells, CO2 reduction, Hydrogen production, Light-emitting diodes and chemical sensors.

Peter Bäuerle Peter Bäuerle received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Stuttgart. He is the Director of the Institute for Organic Chemistry II and Advanced Materials at the University of Ulm. He is co-founder of Heliatek, a spin-off company for the production of organic solar cells. Current interests of his research group include development of novel organic semiconducting materials, structure–property relationships, self-assembling properties, and applications in electronic devices.

Jenny Nelson Jenny Nelson is a Professor of Physics at Imperial College London, where she has researched novel varieties of material for use in solar cells. Her current research is focused on understanding the properties of molecular semiconductor materials and their application to organic solar cells. This work combines fundamental electrical, spectroscopic and structural studies of materials, with the aim of optimizing the performance of solar cells based on molecular and hybrid materials.

Hernán Míguez Hernán Míguez is research Professor of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). He received his PhD at the Autonomous University of Madrid. Since 2004, he leads the group of Multifunctional Optical Materials in the Institute of Materials Science of Seville.  His group’s activities are devoted to the development, characterization and modeling of new photonic architectures for applications in different fields, such as photovoltaics, sensing, or radiation protection.

Herny J. Snaith Henry J. Snaith received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He leads a research group at Oxford University and is CSO and Founder of Oxford PV Ltd. S3. Materials for energy generation and storage

The so-called “energy crisis”, that concerns the global economy as a consequence of the increasing energy demand, the limited natural conventional resources and political and environmental reasons, has led to the need of developing new energy sources. The most developed countries are economically supporting both basic and applied research focused on technology of new sources of energy. In this context, synthesis, structural characterization and study of the electrical and electrochemical properties of new materials are essential areas of Materials Science for optimizing energy-supply or energy-storage devices. This symposium provides an overview of current research on new inorganic materials for power supply or storage of energy, mainly in the fields of Li and post-Li rechargeable batteries and Fuel Cells.

Teófilo Rojo

Teófilo Rojo has been Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) since 1992 and Scientific Director of CIC energiGUNE since 2010. His research is focused on the study of materials for advanced batteries (lithium, sodium, redox, etc.). With an h-indexof 50, he is co-author of more than 450 articles and 5 patents. John Irvine is Professor of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews and currently holds a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award. Eider Goikolea

Eider Goikolea (PhD in 2009, UPV/EHU) is a member of the Supercapacitor Group at CIC energiGUNEsince 2011, first as a postdoctoral researcher and currently at the head of the group leading the hybrid supercapacitor research line. S4. Polymers for a Sustainable Development

The symposium will be centered in the presentation of the most relevant contributions of polymers to a sustainable development of the modern society, taking into consideration the great influence of a variety of polymeric systems in almost all the activities of the society. In this way, it will be considered relevant aspects of the structural molecular design and polymerization mechanisms, advanced applications of polymers from natural or synthetic origin, new processing technologies, and degradation behaviour and recycling considerations in relation with the conservation and sustainability of the society. The conservation of the natural ambient and outstanding contributions in the fields of energy, transport, health, agriculture and locomotion will be considered for the selection of presentations.

Virginia Cadiz Virginia Cádiz received her BSc and PhD in Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1975. This year she incorporated to the University of Barcelona (since 1992 University Rovira i Virgili). In 1992, she became Full Professor of Organic Chemistry and in 2004 was made Distinguished Professor. She is the founding head of the Polymer Group where she initiated, built up, and supervised significant research projects. In the last years, her interest is in sustainable polymer chemistry.

Sebastian Muñoz

After Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1974, Sebastian Muñoz initiated research on bio-based/biodegradable polymers involving synthesis, characterization and properties. His current research is focused on polycondensation polymers derived from carbohydrates as well as on modification of microbial biopolymers with interest in biomedicine and active packaging. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and has been granted more than a dozen of patents on these issues.

Valerie Langlois

Valerie Langlois has completed his PhD at the age of 28 years from University Paris VI. She is now deputy director of the East Paris Institute of Chemistry and Materials Science in Thiais, France (Université Paris Est, CNRS). Her main scientific interests are related to the renewable and biodegradable polyesters, their chemical modifications and synthesis of copolymers. Her research activities are devoted to fundamental aspects of biodegradable polyesters in relation with their biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems, tissue engineering or antibacterial materials. Carlos Jiménez Carlos Jiménez is full Professor from Universidad de A Coruña. He received his PhD from the Univ. of Santiago de Compostela (1988) and did Post-Doctorate stays in California (1988-1991) with Drs. P. Crews (UCSC) and A. Tramontano (Scripps, La Joya). His research is focused on the isolation, structure elucidation and synthesis of bioactive natural products, new applications of NMR techniques and new treatments against fish pathogenic bacteria based on the iron uptake mechanisms by siderophores.

S6. Structural determinants of the molecular recognition processes in biological molecules

Molecular recognition processes enable the intermolecular communication, govern the time cycles of the cell and are essential for the development of enzyme activity, ultimately being responsible for all the subcellular chemical activity. Obviously, these processes are governed by the laws of chemistry, particularly by weak interactions, in a manner analogous to govern as supramolecular Chemistry processes. Thus, it was considered appropriate a symposium that focuses on the key structural elements of the processes of molecular recognition in biology. The symposium is aimed at specialists in many areas of chemistry like Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computational Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Organometallic and Bioinorganic Chemistry, among others. The selected presentations will illustrate how the most advanced techniques of structural biology can provide mechanistic information about the molecular recognition events affecting the most important biomolecules.

Francisco Corzana

Francisco Corzana is an organic chemist at the University of La Rioja, where he has a permanent position as an associate professor since 2005. He has experience in asymmetric synthesis and molecular modelling. His research is focus on synthesis and conformational analysis of glycopeptides and their use in clinical applications, such as tumour detection and vaccines for the treatment of cancer. He is also involved in the design of a new generation of antibody drug conjugates to treat tumours.

Oscar Millet

Oscar Millet after obtaining a Ph D in Organic Chemistry (University of Barcelona, 1999) he joined the group of Lewis Kay in Toronto for a post-doctoral stay (2000-2004). He currently is group leader at the Structural Biology Unit of the CIC bioGUNE. His research line focuses on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance to the study of biologically relevant proteins and enzymes. Tony Davis gained a Ph. D. from Oxford University, under Dr. G. H. Whitham postdoctoral work with Prof. J. E. Baldwin. In 2000 he moved to the University of Bristol, where he is Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry in the School of Chemistry. His main research areas are synthetic supramolecular chemistry, especially with relevance to biology: biomimetic carbohydrate receptors, anion receptors, anion transport across cell membranes, and steroid-based nanoporous crystals.

Steve Matthews His doctoral thesis pioneered the design, development and application of new high-pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance methods to the characterisation of synthetic lubricants.  In 2004, he founded the Cross-Faculty NMR Centre at Imperial College.  In 2008 he became director of the Centre for Structural Biology. The focus of his research are the molecular mechanisms governing the interplay between microbial pathogens and their hosts, and the exploitation of these findings in medicine and bioengineering.

Oscar Llorca Oscar Llorca holds a PhD in Molecular Biology, from the UAM and the CNB. Since 2009 he is a Research Professor at the CIB. He is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate processes of interest in biomedicine and which are controlled by macromolecular complexes. To that end, his group combines functional studies with macromolecules and electron microscopy processing techniques that allow individual molecules to observe and determine its structure.

S7. Chemistry at the Frontier with Biology

Chemical Biology is a multidisciplinary endeavor that has experienced extraordinary developments during the last few years. The advances in modern structural determination techniques, as well as in analytical and synthetic methods allow that most biological probelms can be approached from a chemical perspective, while at the same time, the increased understanding of biological systems fuels new conceptual developments and opens new venues in chemical sciences.

It must be highlighted that Chemical Biology is inherently multidisciplinary, and it is intimately related with all areas of chemistry: from structural chemistry and physical and analytical chemistry (sensors and imaging tools), to organic (synthesis of bioactive molecules) and inorganic chemistry (new catalytic methods for bioconjugation), so that the topics covered in this symposium will be of interest to most member of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry.

M. Eugenio Vázquez M. Eugenio Vázquez obtained his PhD in 2001 under the supervision of Prof. José Luis Mascareñas. In 2001 he joined the group of Prof. Barbara Imperiali at MIT, where he worked until 2004 on the development of chemical tools to understand phosphorylation pathways. Dr. Vázquez returned to Santiago with a Ramón y Cajal contract in 2004, and since 2010 he is Associate Professor at the Organic Chemistry Department, and member of the Center for Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CIQUS).

Hagan Bayley

Hagan Bayley is the Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Oxford. Major interests of his laboratory are the development of engineered pores for stochastic sensing, the study of covalent chemistry at the single molecule level, ultrarapid DNA sequencing and the synthetic biology of minimal tissues. In 2005, Dr. Bayley founded Oxford Nanopore to exploit the potential of stochastic sensing technology. In 2014, he founded OxSyBio to build synthetic tissues for regenerative medicine.

Reza Ghadiri Reza Ghadiri is Professor, Departments of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, and Member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology, at The Scripps Research Institute. He received his Ph.D. in 1987 with Professor B. M. Trost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and joined the faculty of The Scripps Research Institute in 1989 after completing a postdoctoral appointment at the Rockefeller University in the laboratory of Professor E. Mike Murphy

Mike Murphy received his PhD in Biochemistry at Cambridge University in 1987. After stints in the USA, Zimbabwe, and Ireland he took up a faculty position in the University of Otago, New Zealand in 1992. S9. Chemical reactivity through structure

The structural knowledge obtained from X-ray diffraction experiments is essential in the rationalization of reactive processes. Moreover, the observed intermolecular interactions can provide information about the mechanisms or the observed macroscopic physical properties. This MS will deal with the last results obtained in the study of structure-reactivity relationships, and, it is specially focused on the role of structural analysis in the study of reactivity and chemical properties. Therefore, the MS goes beyond small molecule structure determination, but should also cover the analysis of molecular interactions in solid state. The information they provide about a molecule role in a chemical reaction, from different approximations, will also be discussed. This symposium, whose direct application may contribute in new reactive molecules design and optimization, may be attractive to a wide range of researcher in Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or Organometallic Chemistry, among others and may foster new collaboration between these researchers and those closer to Crystallography.

Begoña Bazán Begoña Bazán Blau Graduate in Geology in 1997, she received her PhD in Science in 2003 from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her research in the field of crystallography focuses on the structural resolution and physico-chemical properties of coordination polymers. Alessia Bacchi completed her PhD at the University of Parma in 1994. S10. Asymmetric Organocatalysis

Organocatalysis is currently a very active area of research given its great impact in the discipline of chemical synthesis, with implications in other related areas such as green chemistry, theoretical chemistry, medicinal chemistry or chemical engineering. This symposium is aimed to show the current frontiers in asymmetric organocatalysis. Different aspects will be discussed, including: new strategies of substrate activation, discovery of new organocatalytic reactions, development of new catalysts, the investigation of the mechanism of organocatalytic reactions, and applications to the synthesis of relevant molecules.

Claudio Palomo Claudio Palomo was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1951. He studied chemistry at Instituto Químico de Sarriá (Barcelona, 1975) and at the University of Barcelona (1979). He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of the Basque Country (1983, supervisor: Prof. R. Mestres) wherein he became full Professor in 1989. In 1991 he joined, as visiting professor, the research group of Prof. H. Rapoport at the University of California at Berkeley. His current interests are in the area of asymmetric catalysis.

Petri M. Pihko Petri M. Pihko was born in 1971 in Oulu, Finland. He studied chemistry at the University of Oulu. Nicolaou at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla. S11. Flow Chemistry

The change of paradigm in the synthesis processes performed in batch mode to processes in continuous flow, is taking place in the present. The chemistry in continuous flow presents a series of advantages with respect to batch processes such as the possibility of performing reactions in small space, allowing excellent heat transfer (avoiding exothermic processes and undesired side reactions) and a huge mass transfer that could never be obtained through a conventional process. On the other hand, due to the fact that the reaction occurs continuously, there is no accumulation of dangerous reagents or intermediates, generating a safer process. Also the automation of the process is possible. In addition, the scaling up is straightforward since, under continuous flow conditions, it is allowed an easy intensification of the process and waste reduction, being able to produce from milligrams to medium scale without changing the process. The symposium aims to integrate the latest advances in the area of Flow Chemistry in both academia and industry.

Miquel A. Pericàs Miquel A. Pericàs was appointed to found the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in 2000, being now both Director and Group Leader. His research interest is focused on asymmetric catalysis with immobilized species for the development of flow processes. Prof. Pericàs is also involved in supporting technological innovation in industry, playing a central role in the creation of TECNOQUIRAL, later spin-off Enantia S. L., and promoting the creation of ICIQ Technology Development Unit ERTFLOW.

Esther Alza

Esther Alza obtained her PhD from ICIQ-URV in 2011, under the supervision of Prof. Pericàs and Dr. Sayalero. S12. Target-Oriented Synthesis and New Synthetic Methods.

The symposium will focus on current tendencies in synthetic methodology. New synthetic methods will be discussed, as well as their application to target-oriented synthesis, particularly that of natural products. The development of general synthetic methods is currently attracting considerable interest in the field of organic synthesis. On the other hand, the total synthesis of natural products has stimulated the development of new synthetic methodologies and strategies for the assembly of structurally complex molecules and played a key role in the evolution of organic synthesis.

Joan Bosch Joan Bosch is Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona. His research is focused on the development of general methods and strategies for the synthesis of alkaloids. He has been involved in collaborative projects with chemical and pharmaceutical companies aimed at the development of new synthetic routes for active pharmaceutical ingredients. Kilian Muniz

Kilian Muñiz is ICREA Research Professor at ICIQ, where he also holds an appointment as Group Leader. Understanding functional materials stand on knowing their structure and changes at work (pressure, temperatura, atmosphere, voltaje, reactive liquid, etc.). Operando methodology blends in situ studies during working conditions with simultaneous determination of performance (reactivity, chemisorption, electrochemistry, sensing, etc.). This allows assessing structure-performance relationships at a molecular scale, which is most important in many áreas of chemistry. S14. Prebiotic Chemistry in Space and Earth

Life arose in Earth about 4 million years ago and it essentially contained gases, water, diluted molecules and rocks. Thus, a set of events leading to the emergence of biosystems capable to self-replicate and evolve giving rise to the origin of life took place. These events are not well-known yet and accordingly, “how did life arise?” is still one of the most fundamental questions that remains unanswered. The sequential events associated with the origin of life are linked to a chemical evolution that goes from the formation of essential biomolecules to the emergence of biological macrostructures. In this sequence the chemistry of cosmos must also be accounted for. We live in a universe filled by molecules that could seed the primordial Earth trough the entrance of asteroidal bodies. The objective of this symposium is to attract scientists with interests in astrochemistry and prebiotic chemistry, with the aim to constitute a transversal cornerstone on the origin of life involving astronomy, spectroscopy, gas-phase and surface chemistry, organic chemistry, systems chemistry and molecular biology, and to highlight central questions that remain unanswered.

Albert Rimola Albert Rimola is a computational chemist and is a Distinguished Postdoctoral Researcher by UAB. His main research lines focus on the simulation of processes related to the abiotic chemical evolution in space and Earth (i.e. astrochemistry and prebiotic chemistry), in which solid surfaces play an important role, by means of accurate quantum chemical calculations using both molecular and periodic approaches. Marcelino Agúndez

Marcelino Agúndez is a molecular astrophysicist and a Ramón y Cajal Fellow at CSIC. Josep M. Ribó

The current research activity of Prof. emer. J.M. Ribó is devoted to the study of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in Systems Chemistry. His research group, coled with Prof. A. Moyano, has as general objective, from the point of view of organocatalysis (A. Moyano) and supramolecular chemistry (J.Crusats y Z. El-Hachemi), understanding the emergence of chirality in abiotic chemical evolution: from primordial chiral organic compounds to the homochirality of complex systems. S15. Sustainable chemical utilisation of CO2: Challenges and opportunities

The shift from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources and climate change mitigation are among the great challenges of our society for this century. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) can be considered as a resource instead of waste, which can be used to generate products with value-added using excess energy from renewable sources. In this sense, CO2 valorisation processes make it possible to broaden the horizon of technological alternatives to reduce greenhouse effect emissions, setting the bases for the development of a Circular Economy. This symposium deals with the transformation of CO2 into useful products by means of different ways (catalytic, electrochemical and photochemical), covering the main research advances. The symposium relies on the participation of renowned professionals and researchers and it has been conceived as a space for networking, learning and exchange of ideas and information in this area.

Jonathan Albo Jonathan Albo Jonathan Albo completed his MSc and PhD (2012) in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria, focused on the development of new membrane based processes for CO2 separation. After that, he held a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship (2013) at Hiroshima University and then he joined the University of the Basque Country as a Juan de la Cierva researcher (2014-2016). Pedro Castaño received his MSc and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in 2002 and 2006, respectively. S16. Applications of Raman Spectroscopy to Modern Chemistry

In the last decade, Raman Spectroscopy (RS) has become an essential tool in most areas of Chemistry. RRS (resonant), SERS (surface enhanced), SORS (spatially offset), TERS (tip enhanced), CARS (coherent anti-stokes) and other Raman-based techniques have contributed to major advances fields ranging from nanochemistry to biochemistry. Both national and foreign specialists will present in this symposium the opportunities offered by this interdisciplinary spectroscopic technique to solve many chemical problems, under both fundamental (nanochemistry, materials chemistry, molecular materials, ...) and applied (food, pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, cultural heritage, space missions, forensic analysis, ...) points of view.

Jesús González Prof. Jesús González has worked in several Universities worldwide (Los Andes, Ottawa, Lille, Pierre et Marie Curie, Valencia, Paul Sabatier and Cantabria). Pavel Matousek Pavel Matousek Since 1991, he has worked at the Rutherford Appleton Lab. He pioneered the concepts of Kerr-gated Raman and Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) and introduced transmission Raman spectroscopy (TRS) into chemical analysis. Pavel has published over 180 peer reviewed articles, filed 10 patents and co-edited a book on Raman Spectroscopy. Juan Carlos Otero  Juan Carlos Otero is professor at the Universities of Extremadura, Granada and Málaga, its research is presently focused on Raman Spectroscopy, especially, on fundamental issues related to the Raman enhancement by means of localized plasmons on metal nanostructures and their relationship with the electronic structure of metal-molecule hybrids. S17. Chemistry in forensic sciences

This is the first time that a mini-symposium focused on forensic chemistry is organised in the Biennale Congress of the Royal Society of Chemistry, thus the main objective of this mini-symposium is showing the state of the art, as well as the most recent research related to forensic chemistry through a wide variety themes, including the analysis of explosives and drugs, the study of questioned documents, fire investigation and inspection of the crime scene, among others.

To carry out this mini-symposium, three invited conferences from national and international researches will be held, together with oral communications about forensic chemistry from different researchers and professionals working on this theme at different National Institutes and National Security Forces. Besides, the mini-symposium will include flash communications for the brief exposition of research based on forensic-chemistry from young Ph.D. students.

Olivier Delémont is associate professor at the Ecole des Sciences Criminelles (School of Criminal Justice) of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. The concept of Biosensing refers to a variety of phenomena of biological origin used to obtain qualitative and quantitative information by transducing a biochemical interaction on a physical signal.

Biosensing is an interdisciplinary symposium aimed to publicize information, especially on basic research, from different converging areas. Researchers and technologists from the fields of chemistry, biotechnology, material science or chemometrics, among others, who are interested on obtaining knowledge and information using biosensing principles, are invited to participate.

S19. Ligand design for metal-mediated bond-cleavage & bond-forming reactions

The discovery of bond-cleavage and -forming processes promoted by transition metal complexes more than 40 years ago laid the foundations for novel synthetic strategies and methodologies now at the forefront of contemporary chemistry. The progressive mechanistic investigation of these elementary bond recompositions is revealing that many of them are actually assisted by different kinds of metal-ligand cooperation phenomena, whose understanding and implementation in the next generation of catalysts is crucial for the future chemical industry. From this perspective, this symposium embraces rational, goal-oriented ligand design, including sterically engineered ligands, pincers, redox active ligands, Lewis acid and base elements, frustrated Lewis pairs, secondary interactions, and incorporating functionality that offers additional bond making and breaking options. The symposium will set out to create a forum between researchers with diverse expertise to catalyze advances in this field.

Eduardo Sola is a CSIC Scientific Researcher at the ISQCH of Zaragoza. He completed the degree in Chemistry and the PhD at the University of Zaragoza (supervisors M. A. Esteruelas and L. A. Alceo Macchioni is Full Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Perugia. S20. Progress in Theoretical Chemistry: Biomolecules and materials

Theoretical and computational chemistry play a major role in the development of chemical processes, and has become an essential tool of (bio)chemical studies. In the field of catalysis, the study of mechanisms is fundamental for understanding and improving the reactions, which is often done using DFT. Also in other fields has computational chemistry become the leading tool to find new discoveries. In this symposium we focus on three topics: (i) chemical bonding, (ii) biomolecular structure and (iii) functional materials. Within the five sessions these three topics will be amply discussed by experts in the field, together with other general topics such as excited states and catalysis.

Núria López obtained her PhD in Chemistry “cum laude” from the Univ. Barcelona and is currently Senior Group Leader at the ICIQ Tarragona, and part-time professor at the Univ. Rovira Virgili. Julia Contreras García

Julia Contreras García defended her PhD in Computational and Theoretical Chemistry in 2008 at the Universidad de Oviedo. Her thesis received several Awards from her University and the Chemistry Association. She then moved thanks to a Fulbright grant to Weitao Yang’s laboratory at Duke University, where she stayed for two years. She then moved for another year as a Spanish Ministry postoc to Andreas Savin’s group in Paris. During this year, she obtained a research permanent position at CNRS. Ever since, she works at the Theoretical Chemistry Labortatory in Université Pierre et Marie Curie. She works on two topics: chemical bonding and high pressure. With 36 years old, she is the author of more than 50 papers, some of them with hundreds of citations. She has been awarded the High Pressure Junior Research Award.

Francesco Luigi Gervasio

Francesco Luigi Gervasio is Professor of Chemistry and Structural and Molecular Biology at University College London (UCL) since 2013. Lynn Kamerlin studied chemistry at Lodz University of Technology, Poland, from which she obtained her PhD in 2015. During her studies she was awarded an Erasmus scholarship to spend one semester at Ghent University, as well as a Fulbright Junior Advanced Research Grant to pursue part of her doctoral research in the group of Prof. Darrin York at Rutgers University. She is currently a Wenner-Gren postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Lynn Kamerlin at Uppsala University. Zbigniew Łodziana got his PhD en Physics in 1999 in Poland IFJ-PAN. He has conducted his research at the University of Vienna, Technical University of Denmark, and EMPA in Switzerland. Since 2004 his research efforts have concentrated in the modelling of new materials for energy, in particular for energy storage. S21. Nanocatalysis

The application of metal nanoparticles as catalysts is receiving an ever-increasing interest since they provide advantages from both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, in terms of recovery and reuse, together with high activity and modulation of their properties for selectivity. This symposium pretends to highlight the potential of these nano-objects in catalysis, including various synthetic strategies, detailed characterisation, magnetism and innovative catalytic applications. Special emphasis in the selectivity of such catalysts will be presented with examples in reactions providing interesting organic products of interests through processes such as hydrogenation, oxidation, CC coupling, CH activation, etc... The symposium will highlight the recent progress in the field of nanocatalysis and show the distinct approaches used by experts in the areas of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Cyril Godard

Cyril Godard was awarded his PhD at the University of York, UK, working on the photochemical synthesis of organometallic complexes. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Prof. Duckett studying reaction mechanisms by NMR spectroscopy before incorporating the group of Carmen Claver at the URV in 2005, where he is currently as a Ramon y Cajal Researcher. During these years, CG has mainly worked on well defined molecular catalysts for fine chemicals but also developed metallic nanocatalysts for reactions such as arene hydrogenation, Fischer-Trospch, etc...He is currently the co-author of 54 articles and 6 book chapters and has been involved in over 30 projects from public calls and industrially sponsored.

Jairton Dupont is Professor of Sustainable Chemistry, University of Nottingham . He has published over 270 publications and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences. S22. Enseñanza, Historia y Divulgación de la Química

Este Simposio será un foro de intercambio de conocimientos y discusión en el que se pretenderá contribuir a la formación de la cultura científica, ayudar al profesorado a motivar a los alumnos hacia el aprendizaje de la Química, la Física y otras Ciencias Experimentales, así como apoyar su labor en los diferentes niveles educativos en los que fomentar las denominadas “competencias STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)”.

Para ello se admitirán los trabajos que desarrollen un aprendizaje activo en el alumnado y que muestren cómo la Química y el resto de las Ciencias están implicadas en la vida cotidiana de acuerdo con enfoques educativos del tipo Ciencia-Tecnología-Sociedad (CTS) y de Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP), entre otros.

El principal objetivo de este Simposio será facilitar la información, contrastar opiniones y compartir experiencias sobre diversos aspectos de la enseñanza, la divulgación y la historia de las distintas ciencias desde una amplia perspectiva. Por ello se incluirán los aspectos metodológicos de la enseñanza (aprendizaje activo, aprendizaje basado en problemas/proyectos, adquisición y evaluación de competencias, uso de las TIC, etc.), los epistemológicos (¿qué conceptos deberían enseñarse?), los contenidos de otro tipo (implicaciones de la divulgación científica en la sociedad, imbricación de actividades de divulgación con el quehacer docente, etc.) y, por supuesto, la investigación en la historia de las ciencias en general y de la química en particular

S23. Women in Chemistry

In the last few years our scientific community has witnessed an increase in the number of women leading strong research programs in Chemistry. Today, it is relatively common to find women in top institutions throughout the world, although the gender ratio is still far from equal.

This Symposium intends to be a multidisciplinary forum for a number of female researchers to show their excellent work in the fields of Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Nanoscience and Materials Science. Beyond the obvious interest that the quality of the lectures will generate, the participation of younger researchers is encouraged through flash communications and a poster session.

Finally, we expect this symposium will transcend a strictly scientific discussion by providing a chance for successful role models to stimulate new generations of women to pursue a career in science.

En 2005, se trasladó al Scripps Research Institute, Florida (EE.UU.) para trabajar con el Prof. William Roush. Pablo Mauleón Mauleón earned his PhD. Degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2006, working with Prof. J. C. Carretero. Pablo worked for Prof. F. Dean Toste at the University of California, Berkeley (USA, 2006-2008), and the University of Basel (Switzerland, 2009-2011), where he worked with Prof. Andreas Pfaltz. In 2011, Pablo returned the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Ramón y Cajal), where he works on stereo- and regioselective C-C and C-X bond forming reactions, and metal-free hydrogenations.

Cristina Nevado received her PhD in Organic Chemistry at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid working with Antonio M. Echavarren in the cyclization of 1,6-enynes catalyzed by late transition metals. In 2006 she joined the lab of Alois Fürstner as a post-doc at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (Germany) where she worked on the total synthesis of Iejimalide B. In 2007 she joined the University of Zurich as an Assistant Professor. In 2013 she was promoted to Full Professor.

María Jesús Vicent

María Jesús Vicent received her Ph.D. degree in 2001 from University Jaume I Castellón. She then moved to the UK to work with Prof. R. Duncan (2002). In 2004, María joined the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe (CIPF) as a research associate, and in 2006 she was promoted to her current position as head of the Polymer Therapeutics Laboratory at the CIPF. Her research group focuses on the development of novel nanopharmaceuticals for therapeutic applications.

Marina Pilar Villegas Gracia

Marina Pilar Villegas Gracia obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry in 1993from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. After several years at the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), where she was Deputy Director at the Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio, in 2012 she joined the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness as Deputy Director of Research Projects. Since 2014 she is General Director of Scientific and Technological Research at the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

Miquel A. Pericàs

Miquel A. Pericàs obtained his PhD degree in 1979 under the guidance of the late Prof. Fèlix Serratosa at the University of Barcelona. After postdoctoral studies at the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) with Prof. Francesc Camps, he joined the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of Barcelona in 1980 as an Associate Professor. Since 1991 he has been a Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at that institution. In June 2000, he was appointed as Director of ICIQ.

Concepció Rovira

Concepció Rovira obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry in 1977 from the Universidad de Barcelona in the area of organic radicals. She performed postdoctoral studies in the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) with Prof. Ballester and at the Johns Hopkins University (Maryland, USA) with Prof. D. O. Cowan in the area of organic conductors. Back in Europe, she joined the CSIC as a postdoctoral fellow and in 1987 she became Tenured Scientist there and was promoted to Full Professor in 2004. In 1992 she joined the Institut de Ciencia de Materials de Barcelona (CSIC) where she is since then codirector of the NANOMOL group.

S24. Metal-Organic (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs)

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are new types of porous materials based on self-Assembly of organic-inorganic (MOFs) and organic-organic (COFs) prearranged synthons. The variety of synthons, as well as synthetic conditions (and/or postsynthetic modifications) can lead to the production of porous materials a la carte with adsorbent and/or catalytic properties that exceed in many aspects to classical porous materials. This field of research is moving very fast evolving from the initial interest on the synthesis and characterization of these systems to the formation of advanced materials with exotic properties (Science, 2013, 341, 1230444; Science, 2015, 348, 988; 148; Nature, 2015, 520, 9) as well as interest to technology sector transfer. This symposium aims to give an overview of the current state of the art in this field as well as future prospects.

Jorge A. Rodriguez is Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Granada since 2010. His research is focused on the synthesis and applications of discrete and extended polygonal coordination assemblies with applications in the fields of environmental remediation and biomedical chemistry. Jorge Gascon

Jorge Gascon (Huesca, 1977) received his MSc. in Chemistry in 2002 and his PhD cum laude in Chemical Engineering in 2006, both at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). He was post-doc (2006 to 2009), Assistant Professor (2010 to 2012) and Associate Professor (2012 to 2014) at TUDelft. Since 2014 he is Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professor of Catalysis Engineering at the same university. Patricia Horcajada

Patricia Horcajada has a multidisciplinary scientific background (Pharmacy BCs, 2001 and Material Science Ph.D, 2005).
